The film hints at but does not explicitly narrate the fact that the Vietnamese felt, despite their losses, that the battle was a great victory. From it they learned the central tactical lesson of the war: the Americans' advantage in firepower was neutralized by simply staying so close to them that they were afraid to unloose their full capability for fear of slaughtering their own men.
