The vegetation is lovingly detailed, yet just as unreal as surrounding landscape. Tropical brush in Paris suburbs; trees tall as palms with fronds of delicate fern. Imaginary space of juxtaposition: a pistol shot in the year 1000.

Opposite to Lautréamont. Where Lautréamont makes commonplace objects unfamiliar by placing them in strange contexts, Rousseau places exotic objects in mundane contexts.

Opposite to Brecht. Where Brecht foregrounds artificiality to demolish subjectivity, Rousseau's artificiality is real as dreams.
