France, 1945.

Old-looking youth. Army cap, Army shirt, Army owl specs. Earnest, sincere, not smiling.

In the snow, Army green jacket, trousers tucked in boots. Sergeant stripes, Army cap, scowl. He's not there for a good time.

In the snow next to a lorry. On a street before a wall with snow on the ground.

France means recovering from the wound he received near the Elbe, on April 13. There's no record with his effects of exactly how he was injured, but he was awarded the Purple Heart, meaning it has to have been in or supporting combat.

These all read on the reverse: "To Dad, & Mother, with love. Donald. France 1945"
