I spoke with the very friendly middle-aged woman staffing the ticket counter. I told her I'd been here in 1979, which she found amazing; and that then we'd had free access to the entire site: nothing was roped off, for either the site's protection or ours. And I mentioned that this had been true of many of the sites we visited on this trip: formerly they were wide open, now access is controlled. She told me that the Greek government had been renovating and publicizing the ancient archaeological sites before the financial crisis; but that the crisis had brought nearly all progress to a halt. While we were here a single caretaker swept some of the paths, and moved rocks around in a wheelbarrow.
