I'm standing on strip of shoreline south of Lake Fauna Nui called Maeva, the Maohi
word for "welcome". There are a very large number of restored and semi-restored
marae here along the lake shore, in the growth-covered hillside, and on the
mountain behind me.
I was fascinated by the ancient stone fish trap, still in use,
just at the spot where the river joins the lake. To reach them, two underwater causeways of rocks
were built, one from the northern and one from the southern shore. This is the
beginning of the southern one, leading to the fish trap mid-river off frame right.
