December, 2005. Road trip, New Mexico.
A week on the road with my great friend Ted.
New car: Subaru Forester. Replaces my beloved little Corolla, smashed beyond repair two weeks earlier when an elderly lady named Charlotte ran a red light. Sniff! Very sad.
South down the PCH from Pacifica to Long Beach to pick up Ted. Out highway 10 to Las Cruces. Northeast on Highway 70 to White Sands National Monument. North on 54 to the fabulous Three Rivers Petroglyphs Site. East on 70 again to the not-nearly-kitschy-enough International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell. West on 380 and 60 to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory Very Large Array outside Socorro. Circle southwest, south, then southeast on 12 and 180 to Silver City. North on 15 to the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. Finally, 90 to Lordsburg, home on 10 and 101. 3272 miles and a very considerable quantity of Mexican food.
Really fun. Over too fast! Amazingly gratifying to be in the desert after weeks and weeks and weeks and weeks of crummy rain at home in NoCal.
