"The first set of structures along the Sacred Way actually date mainly to Roman times and constitute the agora (marketplace). The agora was set up by the Romans to make money off the arriving pilgrims. Now, it's a nice set of ruins including some recognizable shopkeeper stalls that were converted into chapels after the rise of Christianity. On some of the stones you can make out engraved crosses."
