At some point during my university trip in 1979-80, our professor told us a story about Sounion. He said that captured Kapitanios, the Communist guerrillas who'd liberated Greece from Nazi occupation during World War Two, were imprisoned on one of the islands off the cape. If the wind blew in the correct direction, it was possible to hear the screams of the tortured prisoners from the Temple of Poseidon. I asked our tour leader, an archaeology grad student, about that story. He'd never heard it. |
