"The French army? What's that?"

The telegrams arrive by cab. The Army wasn't ready. The Colonel's wife and the young Captain's wife deliver them, hand in hand, to the widows.

Hegel dissected the dialectic of slavery. That the masters are themselves unfree, fettered to their slaves. Imperialism reproduces the relationship on the large scale, as does the racism used to justify it.
