It took more than a year's experience to fully fathom the incompetence of that leadership.

The clash of fantasy: you wanted them to be better than they were, as you wanted the project to be more worthwhile than it was.

In the end they were the usual liars, focused more on their personal positions of prestige than on the success of the group, with all the usual intrigues and petty manipulations, stirred and furthered, I think, by a stiff leaven of professional provocateurs.

That they were absolutely the best of the best of the American left is the core of the history of the previous century: the utter failure of our species' last best hope.
