Perhaps because I fear they want something which I don't wish to give; perhaps because I fear rejection myself; perhaps because - she would have to be right, then - I am socially incompetent; perhaps something in their face or, this is often true, the clothes they're wearing offends me; perhaps because I didn't happen to want to be disturbed.
