Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.

But in practice I'm unable to achieve that discipline. I'm distracted by compassion, so that I take in strays whose illnesses eat whole years of my life.

That's fine. That's who I am. And it's false to say the time is wholly lost. There's good writing from that period. And the experience itself: traumatic and life changing. I accept that and take responsibility for it.
