The mother has come subtly around to understanding addiction as a physical illness rather than rebellion or spiritual eclipse. In her halting and narrow way she's become supportive, a fact so far lost on the evil, shallow, selfish stepsisters.

Of course, she re-writes history by claiming this has always been her view.
