Story and literature are different things.
Story is a constant of human experience. Humans are a storytelling species.
Literature is modern, a type of artistic practice which emerged with the printing press and is dependent on technology for reproduction and distribution. It's artificial, has existed for only a few hundred years, and is not a constant of anything.
Assimilating literature with story holds back both.
