He's expressive in his Army photos.
3rd Platoon, Company E., 334th. July 1945. Eberbach, Germany. Front row, extreme right. There's a smile, an attempt to seem relaxed. His posture is guarded, there's a vigilance. He's not relaxed. But that's at least an expression. Later his photos appear simply empty.
In camp photos before deploying he looks positively jaunty. Perhaps it was as family legend says the experiences of the European Theater which turned him so inward.
