His smile is kind, when it's there at all. It's so rare to see his reserve set aside.
His obituary emphasizes his easy, friendly nature. "Good natured smile", "cheery stories". Neither of these things would I ever have associated with him, but the article seems to have been written by someone who knew him and was genuinely shocked by his sudden passing.
Her smile is distant, there's a film of lagging comprehension over her eyes. I don't feel this is retrospect granted her later dementia. She simply wasn't very bright, that was inescapable to me even as a small child. Not very bright, not very nice. Granted both of those things she'd naturally been a schoolteacher. That was my assessment while I was still in grammar school.
