He's thick, jowly, frowning. There's a sternness, a lack of humor which confirms the stories. He's rigid, lacking empathy or compassion.
She's thicker than her girlish pic in the Sunday hat three decades earlier and many states to the east. She looks careworn. The Great Depression was hard, now her sons are in the war.
They both look tired.
