I still have those little bookcases.
She bought them unfinished, then lacquered them herself. I remember vividly the stroke of the brush, leaving behind the clear shine which is still there half a century later.
I keep them in my bedrooms, as I shuffle largely aimlessly from one too-large house to the next. They hold my bibles, some reference works, a pair of healthy and increasingly large green houseplants.
