The Sheriff arrives to ask me to sit down, so that he can inform me of my mother's death. There in one little moment of stunned silence inside the hurricane of my now-ex-fiancée's violence and abuse.
Naturally we expect he's here for her, not me. The shock of any lifetime: your mother is dead. And that's final and now there's no possibility.
