It was the songs I hadn't heard before which wrecked me. On the Golden Decade, volumes I and II.
"Memphis, Tennessee": didn't see the punchline coming. Totally slayed.
The amazing piano from Johnnie Johnson, who I didn't know at the time, on "Wee Wee Hours", "House of Blue Lights" and other tracks. The meter, the word play on songs like "You Never Can Tell".
I loved "Rock and Roll Music" and "Roll Over Beethoven" — I'd heard them before, from The Beatles of course. But it was all these amazing songs which were new to me that spun my head around and blew it clean off.
