September 11, 2021:
I loved her for a time.
I didn't and do not respect the adult she grew up to be.
Driven by the expectations of relatives. Rules of appearances: These things you must do. Middle-class conventions of an immigrant community, surfaces without substance.
She cried when we broke up, and wore traditional dress at her wedding.
I'm unsure what I disrespect most. Sending her daughters to an ego-driven private school she can't afford when there's an excellent public school at the end of her block. Or refusing to remain friends with me because her husband forbade it.
