January 8, 2022:
Jacob Lawrence, Henri Rousseau, George Grosz, Robert Natkin, Suzanne Valadon, Paul Gauguin, Banksy.
I could leave it at that. Granted the fact there's a list suggests a tendency to OCD, it's the juxtaposition of those names which engenders, to my mind, a certain resonance. All stylists, where only two — Lawrence and Banksy — consistently imply conventional transparency. The others, I think, communicate mystery.
Resonances of imagery. Free association, in part. What does Carnival Evening mean to you?
To me: The Banquet Years, and the first poster I hung in my dorm room. It's possible I still have it: there are rolled-up prints in the garage.
What would it mean today, were I to hang it again?
