January 29, 2022:

Like Mephistopheles, Professor Falstaff inadvertently did some good.

The books we read for his classes were always stellar. More than that, he had a way of tossing around titles he thought highly of, which turned out to be equally worthwhile.

This is what I remember coming specifically from him:

  • The Interpretation of Dreams [class]
  • The Mediterranean and the Mediterranean World in the Age of Philip II [class]
  • The Man Without Qualities [recommendation]
  • The Anatomy of Melancholy [recommendation]
  • The Archaeology of Knowledge [recommendation]
  • The Alexandria Quartet [recommendation]
  • Dispatches [recommendation]
