The human propensity for pattern false-positives is an especial hazard at work. Seek and ye shall find, whether it exists or not.
So that non-experts insist on theories which over time they express with increasing frustration and hardening insistence, as those who do possess expertise ignore them. Until the work environment becomes acrimonious with high-decibel non-discussion.
Eventually you intervene, not from enthusiasm but because the conflict is crippling productivity. You gather data — statistics — proving that the theory insisted on by the non-experts is false: there is in fact no correlation, that is, no pattern, where they insisted there had been. Which of course fails to quiet the most insistent: they've seen what they seen, false though it is, because that's how their brains work, and they can't be ultimately blamed for that. Where they can be criticized is in not understanding this, and for their strident, unprofessional tone.
