"No! No! Quarter notes. Four to the bar. Four." But wait. What's a "bar"? Why are there four? While I asked for definition they each atavistically repeated the command, leaving me lost. As a result of which my mother the college music major told me bluntly, "You have no sense of rhythm and should give this up."
This is how adults strip you of what you most love.
Incompetent teacher, incompetent parent, although it was four further decades before I drew that lesson.
