June 10, 2022:

In ten years at essentially random a dorm dude taught me "Carol". The barre chords, the shuffling sixth, the double-stops of the intro and riff and solos. Now we're cookin' with gas.

Yet even then the remaining "experts" were selfish. A different dorm dude taught me the chords to "My Favorite Things" so that he could practice soloing over my rhythm. There was no intention there of helping me progress.

There's a hard lesson here, one I'm perhaps still learning to internalize. You have to seek your sources. If you passively accept whatever comes you'll be late in life before gaining the skills which are meaningful to you. Your responsibility to yourself is to find the teachers who will listen to what you tell them you want to learn and who have the knowledge and the skills and the commitment to help you get there.
