April 21, 2023:
The town of Ramona is in fact named for the heroine of Helen Hunt Jackson's 1884 novel of that name.
The novel depicts indigenous people as morally upright; hidalgos as selfishly and neurotically warped; and anglos as the looming threat of the future, present through absence in an interestingly pre-Modernist anticipation. Residents of the current town would likely be surprised. Most certainly my two racist white landladies would be.
Discreet charm of the enraged petty bourgeoisie.
