"It was her choice," sure.
But that choice was itself a symptom of her illness. It was an outcome, a consequence, of the abuse she'd lived and the depression she'd failed to acknowledge.
So that the dynamic was something analogous to a diabetic who refuses her insulin. "It was her choice," sure. It's specifically because of that that intervention might have been appropriate.
